Action Reflection - Patrick

Action Reflection
Prepared by Patrick Domingo
The action that I took was creating a poster. I hung 10 posters around the halls around Serra. The reason that I made a poster is because I currently have an interest in marketing and advertising, which is going to be my major in college. I thought this would be a good experience to practice some of the things that I learned from books on marketing that I have read. Putting the posters up in certain places where people look the most (ie: below the clocks, near the book store and vending machines, etc) also helped me in thinking strategically as far as ad placement is concerned. Overall, I enjoyed the action the most because all the research and all the work done in the project is useless without outreach and spreading the word to everyday people.
What I hope to achieve is at least an emotional connection, or some type of curiosity that my poster will strike inside the reader's mind. As far as success is concerned, I believe there is room for improvement, because ads are losing their effect, and people as a whole aren't responding to advertisements like they did in the 1950's-1960's. I have found the most effective way to grab someone's attention is with a compelling picture and simple, easily digestible text. There are some posters I see in the hallways that have too many words that someone just walking in the hall wouldn't take the time to read. I feel like because of where I placed the ads and the simplicity of my message, that it would at least get them thinking a bit. However, I do believe there is room for improvement as far as the message that I'm sending and the action I want them to do.
I see myself taking action in the future by joining the Peace Corps, and maybe starting my own NGO based on education in third world countries, and starting a blog on the blessings and cursings that the counter culture has contributed to society. I have found that I am very well capable of spearheading an ad campaign and doing very effective research. This project has helped me find out what exactly is needed of me to carry out and implement a project of this nature. It has given me the skills necessary to plan deadlines, achieve realistic goals, and carry out what needs to be done. My eyes have been opened to a world outside of this high school, and this project has helped me understand this world a little better, even though I know I'm still learning the ropes.
